Rebroff
[edit]Hi. I did not add that information to the article, though I see why you were misled. The article, when I got to it was full of statements violating WP:BLP, and I attempted to remove some of them, as well as fix the style, etc. If you look at my edit, I re-arranged a paragraph which stated "Rebroff is famous for singing Russian folk songs (his parents are Russian immigrants) ... occasional consumption of a fine red wine." I removed the comment pertaining to his drinking red wine, as well as the parenthetical comment about his parents, choosing instead to just mention it at the top in a more condensed and stylistically better way. Hi, I am not sure what the consensus is regarding this. I have started a survey on the talkpage. Cheers, Nk.sheridan Talk 22:30, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
Pears Soap
[edit]Hi. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Altavista-1999.png
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:Altavista-1999.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. Bürgergemeinde
[edit]Hi there, Thanks for that information about the Bürgergemeinde. While I read German well, I missed the subtleties of the laws. Thanks for the improvements. Tobyc75 (talk) 23:23, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your work on Seth Kinman
[edit]Thank you very much for the translation into German. Now everybody who reads German can know what a strange breed we Americans are. You may be interested that I just ran into a picture of Kinman at the Library of Congress site and had to know something more about him. A google search turned up more photos and a few biographical bits and pieces and it just kept getting stranger and stranger. Google books turned up a lot. (Might there be something in Google Books in German?) Someday I'll go to the Humboldt University Library in California and read the manuscript "Story of Seth Kinman" to really complete the article and maybe shoot for an FA. I guess what really attracts me to the story - other than its strangeness - is that Kinman wraps up the absolute best and worst of American character all in one person.
Thanks again.
Smallbones (talk) 22:50, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- Well, I'm somewhat attracted to strangeness, so I simply couldn't resist translating an article about "the man who gives chairs to presidents" :-). The many "red" links show that the German Wikipedia's coverage of America is still rather fragmentary... let's hope that they're an incentive. Gestumblindi (talk) 23:05, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
Statistical amassments
[edit]Thanks for the further comments on my talk page. While your initial comment came across as a tl;dr kind of complaint, your second comment made it more clear. I think that the statistics explain the people who live in each Swiss municipality more clearly that some general, unsourced statements. But I can see where it has started to expand maybe further than is good.
Please continue to expand the details about the history and the notable buildings in those municipalities. While I read German pretty well, it takes me quite a while to translate that information.Tobyc75 (talk) 21:33, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
File:North American XF-108-Rapier.jpg appearing on flickr...
[edit]Copyedit from my talk page: "Hi Bzuk; over in the German-language Wikipedia, a user noticed that this file is available here and on flickr with differing licenses and by apparently different uploaders, see there (in German, of course ;-) ). Here on Commons it's uploaded as your own work with a CC-zero license; on flickr, a certain james_gordon_los_angeles (a photographer from Washington DC, according to his profile) uploaded it using the restrictive CC BY-NC 2.0 license: http://www.flickr.com/photos/james_gordon_los_angeles/6473868677/ (so it seems to me that he claims to be the creator of the image, and, according to this license, would require attribution and only non-commercial use). I therefore suppose that james_gordon_los_angeles took the image from you, as your original upload in the English Wikipedia was on September 24, and james_gordon_los_angeles uploaded the image on flickr on December 7. As you licensed it under CC-0, of course everyone may use it freely and without attribution, but the flickr uploader wouldn't be entitled to tag it with a more restrictive license himself, I'd say. Gestumblindi (talk) 21:04, 29 December 2011 (UTC)".
- Hi Gestumblindi, that's my poor attempt at depicting a XF-108 Rapier so that's why I uploaded it to Wikipedia, and left it as a public domain image. James simply re-uploaded it on Flickr, but probably should not claim it as his, but anyone else who wants it can take it off the Wiki or Wiki Commons for free. That's not the worst thing that has happened, my wife got me a book for my birthday, and, lo and behold (to be trite), I opened up the book to find some of my photographs, unattributed, of course, in the book. C'est la vie. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 21:28, 29 December 2011 (UTC).

[edit]Wieso Gestumblindi? Sca (talk) 21:54, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
- Also! Interessant. Ich dachte, daß hätte was mit (Eng.) "dumb" und "blind" zu tun. Sca (talk) 23:13, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Admin Re-election
[edit]I have a question for you about admin re-election. My knowledge of German is non-existent, and in drafting the barebones of a potential RfC regarding the admin re-election concept you brought up at WP:BARC, I'm unsure what a certain category means on de:Wikipedia:Adminwiederwahl/Kurzstatistik means. Could you describe what the four categories are in order, if I have any of these incorrect? I think the mean the following:
- Re-elected
- Not re-elected, but went through the re-election process in full
- Made a decision to retire
- Did not make any decision within the given time period, and so automatically lost sysop privileges
Am I off the mark on any of those? Also, if you're at all interested in helping draft such an RfC, especially in providing further background than what I'm able to, I would certainly welcome that. ~ RobTalk 19:10, 5 August 2015 (UTC)
- @BU Rob13: Yes, that's what they mean, you got it entirely right. Note that all categories refer only to the "Adminwiederwahl" process, so don't contain the names of admins who decided to stand for re-election or retired outside of this process. - As I'm only an occasional contributor to English-language Wikipedia, I wouldn't see me in a major role regarding such a RfC, but if you have any further questions... if I can help clarify things, I'm certainly willing to do so. - I wrote a longish essay on my views of the state of the "Adminwiederwahl" process in 2012, see de:Benutzer:Gestumblindi/AWW2012 - of course it's in German, and I'm not going to translate it now, but trying to give the gist: In the part preceding the paragraph "Update - Ende Mai 2012", I said that I consider the system a success, as admins were only called for re-election if there was widespread serious concern in the community, and there was neither a flood of frivolous requests nor seemed it too hard to collect votes. But then, at the end of May, I was quite disgruntled with the way the system was used. It was about admins with low activity... the issue is rather complex to describe, as it needs knowledge of various rules and customs that are specific to de-Wikipedia; trying to summarize: There are formal requirements for a "right to vote", I described them in the BARC thread. Now, there was a proposal to automatically desysop admins who have lost their right to vote (Stimmberechtigung) due to low activity. This proposal was rejected, but then its supporters got creative, realizing: You also need the Stimmberechtigung in order to be eligible as an admin. So, they only had to call the low-activity admins for re-election - resulting in them automatically losing their privs, as they weren't able to stand for re-election. You may have noticed that in 2012, there is an unusually high number in category 4 (fifteen - only two in 2013 and three in 2014); most of them are due to this affair. That seemed unfair to me (for totally inactive admins, we already have automatic desysopping after a year), and so I was, for a time, rather disappointed by the system resp. its (mis)use. However, it went back to normal. Now I'd say (again) that the system basically works well for de-Wikipedia. Gestumblindi (talk) 19:51, 5 August 2015 (UTC)
- Would you mind taking a quick read through User:BU Rob13/RfC for Administrator Re-election and letting me know if I've summarized the German system properly or if I'm missing anything? I want to ensure I'm not accidentally misstating how your system works. I greatly appreciate your analysis of the system above and any help you're willing to give. Thank you so much! ~ RobTalk 19:55, 5 August 2015 (UTC)
- @BU Rob13: I think you're summarizing the system quite well. Maybe it's worth mentioning that the total number of admins declined after introducing the system, see here - it may be seen as an argument against it (or not, if you say "better have only admins the community really trusts, not as many admins as possible"). - Another thing to note: From 2009 to 2011, the system worked a bit differently. Admins not actively standing for re-election and not relinquishing their rights were not automatically desysopped after 30 days, but instead there was a "forced" re-election vote. It was changed through de:Wikipedia:Meinungsbilder/Abschaffung der Zwangswiederwahlen to the current process. Gestumblindi (talk) 20:31, 5 August 2015 (UTC)
- To add another bit of information, on the practicalities: There's a bot removing outdated (older than six months) re-election votes (there's a dedicated page for each admin where people can post them). Gestumblindi (talk) 21:09, 5 August 2015 (UTC)
- That will definitely be useful in the future, but I'm not worrying about the practicalities of this at the moment. It's obvious that it can be done, but first we need to find out if the community is interested in the idea. ~ RobTalk 21:48, 5 August 2015 (UTC)
Schweinepriester
[edit]Greetings, Gestumblindi. I stumbled across the article on Schweinepriester and wonder what the reason for including it in English Wikipedia could be. What is the relevance to English-speaking WP users? Wikipedia surely cannot be a repository of expresssions in other languages without proven notability. Your view would be helpful, before considering improvement or deletion. mfG Guffydrawers (talk) 12:04, 6 March 2018 (UTC)
- @Guffydrawers: Well, that was seven years ago... I have to admit, I'm a bit at a loss here; can't remember why I thought it would be a good idea to add it. In defence of the article, I could mention that it seems to be fairly popular for such an obscure topic: 217 views in the last 30 days; more than the typical random niche article, I think - Peter De Clercq had 32 views and Georgetown, Arkansas 128 (first results of "Random article"). But I don't feel strongly about it. Maybe you're right and it's rather a case for Wiktionary. Gestumblindi (talk) 00:15, 7 March 2018 (UTC)
Schifffahrtsgesellschaft des Vierwaldstättersees
[edit]I'm not sure I understand the distinction here: [3]. I would consider a ferry any passenger-carrying water transport smaller than an ocean liner. Not all ferries carry cars. Mackensen (talk) 22:33, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Mackensen: Well, I can say that the boats (or ships, as these are called "Schiffe" and not "Boote" locally in German) are not considered ferries (Fähren) in the region, the term never comes up for most of the passenger boats on Swiss lakes (so it's not unique to Lake Lucerne). A reason for this might be that, for more than 100 years now, it has been mainly pleasure/touristic transportation. Even the paddlewheel salon steamers in the late 19th century and early 1900's were built mainly with tourists in mind. They do serve as a means of transportation for commuters to a certain, small degree (mainly the stops between Lucerne and Weggis), and they are integrated into the Swiss public transport schedule, but the whole enterprise wouldn't be viable as a "ferry" business. I don't feel strongly about this, though, if you really want to classify them as ferries. Gestumblindi (talk) 22:42, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
- Gestumblindi, oh yes, I understand what you're saying. It's the integration into the schedules that makes me think of them as ferries, though of course just about everything in Switzerland that carries people is so integrated. I'm at a loss as to what to call them otherwise; I don't know that the distinction exists in English. Regarding viability, I suspect you could say that about half the narrow-gauge railways too :). Let me think on this for a bit. Mackensen (talk) 22:49, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
